The Early Days: A Passion for the Outdoors
My fondest childhood memories are centered on attending fishing and hunting expos while traveling with my parents. These events weren’t just pit stops; they were part of our family’s journey.
As a kid, I was the free labor muscle helping my dad retrieve classic cars through dream barn finds, and the occasional peach orchard pick. Meanwhile, my mom had a keen eye for vintage Coca-Cola collectibles, stopping at every yard sale and flea market along the way. For me, it was all about the thrill of finding vintage fishing gear, specifically Abu Garcia reels, wood baits, and Joy minnow traps.
Traveling to the Best Outdoor Expos
My mom planned our trips strategically, ensuring we visited fishing and hunting shows whenever possible. From Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Springfield, Missouri, to Conway, Arkansas, and beyond—if there was an outdoor event, we were there!
By the age of 12, I had met fishing legends like Jimmy Houston, Larry Nixon, Paul Elias, Bill Dance, and Hank Parker. These icons shaped my pursuit to find a role in the outdoors, as they still remain a position of heavy influence today, among others.
From Attendee to Industry Insider
As life unfolded, outdoor expos remained a yearly tradition, much like Christmas morning. I always left with bags full of gear, new connections, and unforgettable memories.
Eventually, I transitioned from attending major outdoor shows to working behind the scenes at some of the industry’s biggest events. Some of my best memories include working at expos in Nashville, Orlando, and Las Vegas. Even as an adult, my excitement never faded—I was the first to arrive and the last to leave. Some call it passion. I call it purpose.
Finding a Home in the Outdoor Industry
The outdoor industry became my home—not in the spotlight, but in the background, where the magic happens. I found my people—those who speak the same language and share the same passion. This position also gave me a unique platform to share my faith.
I had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with major outdoor brands, turning my admiration for my childhood heroes into real-world experiences, working alongside them in many capacities, but most importantly holding the title of friend.
A New Chapter Begins
Now, as I feel led towards a new chapter—one that has already shown immense promise in just a few short months, it’s something that has to be pursued. Not for me, but for that one person (or many) who has the same passion of connection in the outdoors and to do a new thing.
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” — Isaiah 43:18-19
